A legendary strength coach once told me he liked having his athletes jump on the belt squat and march for three-minutes at a time, because it was great for the hips and glutes.

So I made sure he saw me go straight over and do exactly that...

I was in Ohio visiting one of the strongest and most intimidating gyms in the world. I had also heard that the coach would often give people advice and then watch to see whether they actually listened. I often did this myself on my basketball teams, so I knew what was really going on.

The lesson here goes way beyond belt squat marching.

When someone with real experience takes the time to give you advice, use it.

Don’t wait around. Don’t overthink it.

Put it into action. I stopped helping players who didn't listen. I wasn't going to be the guy who didn’t listen. A coach with years of wisdom knows how much time they've spent in their craft. They value their own time and energy because they have given so much of it.

When you put it into action, two things happen:

1-You get better.

2-That person is more likely to keep helping you.

The fastest way to lose a coach is to keep asking for advice and then never doing anything with it.

As a student, you can’t afford that.
